I came across the NGC Moments Awards and while going through the Terms and Conditions also came across Pt 9 which states,

"The pictures, clippings and films uploaded/posted on the Website shall be so done under an irrevocable, royalty free license and an applicant hereby accordingly grants NGC the right to use the picture/clipping in any medium anywhere in the world in perpetuity."

and pt 11.,
NGC will have the right to use the pictures without the credits of the author/producer/owner of the image or the movie clipping

http://www.natgeotv.co.in/MomentAwards/TermsandConditions.aspx

In the interest of unsuspecting photographers, I am of the opinion that this unethical to hoodwink an amateur or an enthusiast who is not aware of terms like 'royalty free', 'any medium' or 'perpetuity' or its implications for an incentive like a free gift.

Also, I find it an unfair that an agency of the repute of National Geographic is involved in.

i suggest we as a photographic community should not endorse the same by non participation as well as by spreading the word of caution.

I am spreading the word about this to all relevant communities, media and sponsors alike to ensure practises such as these do not spread further at least in India and if we as a photography community donot set standards or educate fellow photographers', corporates like nat geo will benefit at the expense of the photographer.

Lets join hands in this folks

Macro Shot: Green Insect?

Macro Shot of a Green Insect? Emphasis on: (1) Focus & Zoom. (2) Smaller Aperture.

Click for Better Image / Comments: http://www.flickr.com/photos/prabhatps/3209589657/

This macro / closeup shot was taken by me of an insect (Name not known?) at Vira, Kachchh, Gujarat. The Guy was very interestingly posing in a macho style - ready to attack stance… on the roadside which caught my attention.

I had to get really… really lower (almost 180°) on the ground to angle it from the front & very closely (about 3-5 inches). It took some patience & some tweaking on the camera to get this correct composition. 2 elements were of prime importance to me: (1) Zoom & Focus. (2) Aperture.

I opened my lens's full focal length to get as close as possible (as I did not have Macro Lens). But as with the Zoom came a difficult task to keep this guy exactly in the centre of frame & avoid any shake. Hence the second thing I did was setting Higher F-Stop (Aperture), which helped me in controlling excessive Day-Light & increase the DoF in macro. Had I opened the Aperture more (Lower F-Stop Nos.) the details could have been blurred & the image could have been softened, which generally is not desirable in Macro Shots.

Another good thing happened with these settings was that; the Subject (insect) is in in tight frame with sharp focus on its front body and the background got blurred ( which otherwise would have distracted the eye from the subject).

- PRABHAT {Lucky}

Shot with: Sony Alpha-DSLR-A350 with 18-200 Tamron Lens .
Shutter : 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture : f/11.0
Focal Length : 200 mm
ISO Speed : 200
Exposure Bias : 0 EV
Flash : Off
Metering Mode : Multi-segment
Light Source : Natural Daylight
Color Space : sRGB
White Balance : Auto
Color Temperature : Auto
Color Mode : Vivid
Contrast : Normal
Saturation : Normal
Sharpness : Normal

Its real size was about 5-8 mm.

This is shot keeping in mind the Medium to Short DoF. As I just wanted to bring out (separate) the Dark coloured flower from the twining background of the leaves & stems of the plant, yet keeping the focus enough to create some depth from front to back. You will notice 3 things (as desired): One, is the sharp Local-Focus on the tiny flower. Two, is the next leaves & stems of the plant. Three, is the out-focused 2nd Dark flower.

Shot with: Sony Alpha-DSLR-A350.
DOF ~ Depth of Field.

DOF ~ Depth of Field & applications to judge it.

Depth of field (DOF) is a term which refers to the areas of the photograph both in front and behind the main focus point which remain "sharp" (in focus). Depth of field is affected by the aperture, subject distance, focal length, and film or sensor format.

A larger aperture (smaller f-number, e.g. f/2) has a shallow depth of field. Anything behind or in front of the main focus point will appear blurred. A smaller aperture (larger f-number, e.g. f/11) has a greater depth of field. Objects within a certain range behind or in front of the main focus point will also appear sharp.

I was always looking for some logical & concrete ways to gauge DOF ~ Depth of Field & also applications to correctly measure it. While photographing (specially Landscapes) I guess many Photographers face this challenge. As what should be their Best Shot in capturing the most (therotically) correct picture.

Now NO GUESS WOK REQUIRED. You can know scientifically & precisely and use the Tools from this site: http://www.dofmaster.com/ for correct DOF. The site has DOF calculators of 3 types: For Windows, For Palm OS & the Printable Charts. A real techie stuff indeed…!

For further study on DOF, please refer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
http://www.dpreview.com/learn/key=depth+of+field
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/fototech/htmls/depth.html
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/950/depth-of-field.html
http://toothwalker.org/optics/dof.html
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/dof.shtml

- So now, Have A Deep-Focused photography…!
- PRABHAT.

(www.gimp.org) The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is a free raster graphics editor used to process digital graphics and photographs. Typical uses include creating graphics and logos, resizing and cropping photos, altering colors, combining multiple images, removing unwanted image features, and converting between different image formats. GIMP can also be used to create basic animated images in GIF format. It is often used as a free software replacement for Adobe Photoshop, the most widely used bitmap editor in the printing and graphics industries; however, it is not designed to be a Photoshop clone.
